Survive

3 more days...I just...need to...survive...these 3 days.  And I have a sore throat and am coming down with a cold because of all the stress I've been under this past month and a half.  But, only 3 more days.

A big bucket of randomness

Friend: They're having an all-you-can-eat crawfish dinner on Sunday.
Me: Do you like crawfish?
Friend: Yeah, it's tasty.  Don't you like it?
Me: It's alright...it's just...well... it's too much effort to have to put into eating food.  I mean, what's the point of living in the modern world if you have to put that much effort into eating.  It's like caveman days.  I might as well go catch it too.  It's so... tiring!

Oh, Hans!  So sad.

The best of Hans Moleman, they have a lot of good one but they don't have "That's 8 min of my life I'll never get back.  Oh I'd waste it anyway":

The best of Ralph, but they don't have my favorite, "it tastes like burning"

Art

I came across this photo journal today about a photographer who photographed her 110 lbs weight loss and what that means in our society.  You have to read her descriptions of her photos, they give more insight into her art.  I love all the detail and thought that went into each image, she is a very talented artist and I'm glad she made such a positive change in her life.  Imagine the will power it takes!  That is impressive!

Then I came across this YouTube clip.  It's a rollie pollie day :)

For some reason I was thinking about Mrs. Doubtfire today, particularly this scene, one of my favs:

Bourgeois extravagance

I went to a dine-in theater tonight to see Oblivion.  It was my first time at a dine-in theater.  Once you get over feeling bourgeois about having food delivered to you in a theater, it's quite fun!  I loved that it was 21 and over, no noisy kids or stupid teens, and you get have alcohol while you watch the movie.  Everything was outrageously priced of course, but it's good for a once-in-awhile splurge.  The food was tasty too and so much of it!  I couldn't finish it all.  And the reclining seats were sooooo comfy, I didn't want to leave.  If they had given me a blanket I think I would have fallen asleep right then and there.  I'm definitely going to that theater again, not all the time (it's way too expensive for that) but for a special occasion, like maybe after my defense I'll treat myself to a simultaneous dinner and movie at the dine-in theater.

Now a quick comment about the movie.  Oblivion was good, but I wish they hadn't revealed in the trailers that Morgan Freeman was searching for and captured Tom Cruise or that they would get to that reveal earlier in the movie.  For something that they so freely revealed in the trailers, they spent a lot of time building up to it and kept it shrouded in mystery.  The movie did have a couple other twists though, one was really unexpected.

Simplicity

I miss watching Little Mosque.  It was a cute, simple, funny show with quirky and likable characters.  Catch the entire series on Hulu Plus!

Sigh, academia

An e-mail from my advisor in its entirety:

"These are not accurate -

this must be the problem - you do not hear or process what is being said -"

…Well, since I haven't perfected time travel yet and haven't developed my psychic mutant powers, wanna tell me what it was you said??

Of course, the above is what I wanted to say; in reality, I didn't reply. Sadly, this e-mail is all too familiar in academia and could have come from any advisor. It is a prime example what is fundamentally wrong with academia and a large majority of professors.

Solution: I'm going to start recording our conversations. I tried sending recapping e-mails in the past but those never worked, my advisor would just ignore them. No one can argue with a recording.

Peachy

Ain't life a peach?  You go out thinking you'll unwind after a long week of working on your dissertation and finally finishing all chapters (including the intro and conclusion) and getting a high score on a job prospective job ranking and then life goes and punches you the metaphorical nuts.

Since I couldn't find a drawing of a peach getting punched and I'm not talented enough to draw it, here's a drawing I found of Princess Peach getting punched in the face by some character I'm not familiar with.

Today I realized that Cass, from Supernatural, is single handily responsible for seasons six, seven, and eight.

Major, MAJOR spoilers after the jump.

Random musings

Friend: Which do you think would hurt less, a scratch from a cat or a bite from a dog?
Me: A scratch from a cat.
Friend: Which do you think would hurt less, a bite from a cat or a bite from a dog?
Me: A bite from a cat.
Friend: You think that would hurt less?
Me: Yeah, dogs have big teeth, bigger than cats.  I think even a little dog like a chihuahua would have bigger teeth than a cat.  I mean those teeth are called canines after all, not felines.
Friend: *laughing* Good point!

The small screen

Wow, I'm finally caught up with all my shows for once!  Finales, cancellations, and breaks really helped me this week!  But I'll fall behind on Friday when Happy Endings airs at the same time as Nikita...and we all know which show's going to win that battle!  Spartacus is ending this week, so one less show to watch.  I'm not really really impressed with the final season.

Pomodoro

I made some great progress on my chapters today, thanks to my old friend, the Pomodoro Technique!  I completed 5 Pomodoros!!  That might be a record for me.  I used this Pomodoro tool to help me.  Briefly, the Pomodoro Technique is a time/task management technique measured pomodoros, which are 30 min blocks of time.  Twenty-five minutes of the pomodoro is spent working or organizing your daily tasks, the last 5 min is used as a break.  The rules are that you can not interrupt a pomodoro once it has started and you must take your 5 min break.  Click on the link above for more information.  I find the pomodoro helps me overcome any anxieties I might have about starting a project and also help focus.  It's easy to convince myself to just do 25 min of revisions or whatever and not freakout over it or to focus for only 25 min.  But usually once I start a pomodoro it's for me to continue, it's the starting that's hard.  It really just applies the whole "a journey of 1,000 miles begins with the first step" idea to your work.

Blue

I finished watching Blue, the webseries starring Julia Stiles.  You can watch it on the WIGS Youtube channel.  It is an amazing series.  There are 38 webisodes each 5-10 min long.  Really great acting, writing, and story...except for Lavinia, especially her first appearance in season 1 episode 4.  That dialogue was super awkward and forced.  Nevertheless, watch the series, you won't be disappointed!  I'm thinking of watching some of the other WIGS webseries after my defense, including the one Julia Stiles writes and directs, I think it's called Paloma.

What kind of desk eater are you?

Witty article, with some sad truths about our society.  I'm definitely one of those that prefers to eat at my desk, it's more convient, I can catchup on my personal e-mail, Facebook, news,...even Hulu or Netflix queue (gasp, dare I be so brave?!), or Google the random questions popping in my head during the day.  I use a desktop and laptop.  Luckily, I have one those keyboard trays that pulls out from under the desk so I have more desk space, also my monitor is set on the desk's monitor shelf, so I have extra desk space.  I usually have last night's leftovers for lunch and take a Japanese style to my lunch packing and use stackable bento boxes.

Oh. My. God.  The week is finally over!!!!!  I can't wait to sleep in and recover from the super busy week!  And get back to my dissertation.  Almost there....

Observations

Yea for self discipline!  This evening when I got home I was sooooo tired and just wanted to lie down and sleep but I forced myself to exercise for 30min and wow!  I was up like I had coffee.  I am beginning to crash now though...so think I'll go to bed :)
