I was thinking about the giving tree, and other Shel Silverstein books and poems. I went to Wikipedia to see what it said about the themes of The Giving Tree and two Missing Piece books; here's what Wikipedia says about the theme of the The Giving Tree: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Giving_Tree#Interpretation
I always thought one of the themes, other than self-sacrificing love, of The Giving Tree was environmental. I thought the boy represented humanity and how we just take and take from the Earth and eventually there will be nothing left for the Earth to give us. I was always bad at the boy for taking the tree for granted and asking so much of the tree, only visiting the tree when he needed something. The story always made me sad. What do you think the theme is about? Do you agree or disagree with Wikipedia?
